Home is where you heart is….even if it’s not a house!  Five ways to make your first apartment feel like home!

It feels like you’re a real adult when you get your first apartment.  It’s an exciting time for sure and you should be so proud to show off that accomplishment!  Now that you’ve reached this milestone in your life, here are 5 ways to make your first apartment look and feel special!

  1.  Enjoy color:  Even if your landlord won’t let you paint, you can always have color and interest in your space through your furniture and accessories.  You can add an accent chair with a pop of color to add interest and excitement to the room.  Art is a wonderful way to add color and style and can be very cost effective.
  • Add texture: If you prefer neutral colors, make sure that you layer with texture.  You can use different fabrics and textures and patterns to give your room a look that will feel as if it has depth character and style.  By adding different textures such as furry pillows, shag rugs,, velvet chairs or pillows, decorative accessories made of metal, glass furniture, metal or organic materials including plants and wood textures.
  •  Make it shine:  Makes sure you use at least one metal finish.  You can add a gold lamp to add some sparkle to a room.  If you prefer a more clean and modern feel, brushed nickel or chrome will shine in any space.  Metals can be the small detail in lamps or accessories that will sparkle like jewelry in your room.
  • Add layers:  Layer a rug over the standard apartment carpeting.  This will not only help define the space, but will add another layer of color, texture and interest to your space.
  •  Scale and balance:  Keep the scale of furniture to the right proportion.  The correct scale of furniture will actually make your space feel bigger and create a cozy atmosphere. Oversized furniture will overwhelm the space.  Find the key pieces you need and stick with classic styles and clean lines.   You need the right scale of furnishings so that you can use the space with ease whether entertaining or just hanging out and watching Netflix!
